Lincoln, Neb . -- A  "pig" wearing a watchful mask will hand out copies of PETA's free "Vegetarian Starter Kit" as PETA members hold placards reading, "Plant Farms Breed Flu--Go Vegan," in Lincoln on Tuesday. The demonstration will take place during the second leg of a PETA ambit that is designed to help citizens understand the causal connection between swine flu and the demand for cheap marrow, which encourages the spread of filthy, crowded factory farms.

When:   Tuesday, December 1, 12 noon

Where:  Intersection of 14th and O streets, Lincoln

Plant farms are breeding grounds for life-threatening diseases, including swine flu, avian flu, E. coli infection, and others. According to the U.S. Centers for Infection Control and Prevention, 30 to 50 percent of commercially raised pigs in the U.S. have been infected with some impression of swine flu. Factory-farmed animals are stressed and disease-ridden as a result of being confined to uncomfortable, filthy sheds.

I charge Disney for marketing A Christmas Carol during the Halloween season. Sam (8) has gotten interested in scary movies, but he's gotten them all conflicting up in his head, which is easy enough, I guess, since he hasn't seen any of them.

It all began with a commercial for Universal Studios' Halloween Loathing Nights, which featured a 20-something guy walking into a deserted, decrepit theater lobby. He's menaced by the doll from Saw, then Chucky from Descendant's Play, then finally a guy in a pig mask, also from Saw. The pig-mask guy has a blade that shoots out from his sleeve and the commercial ends with the pig-mask guy (presumably) slashing the throat of the 20-something guy.

This commercial aired for weeks during children's tube blocks, so Sam and Kit (6) got to see it plenty of times. To a 20-something, or even to a teenager, the ad was witty and delightful, but for a pre-teen it was flatly shocking and abhorrently violent. Kit finally...
