“Dad, if you don’t give this big 10,000 stars, I’m going to make sure you don’t get any pie.”

This was a serious threat, because, well, I like pie.

Yes, my daughter loved this film. She loved it as much as she hated “Where the Wild Things Are,” which she found a bummer from beginning to end. Both movies dispensation a willingness to tread where “kids movies” normally don’t, but “Mr. Fox,” based on the work by Roald Dahl, charmed her from image one.

And it charmed me, too. While “Wild Things” encourages us to dig lost inside our psyches, “Mr. Fox” wants to please. There’s merit in both kinds of movies, but only one has you leaving the theater smiling.

The denominate fox is voiced by George Clooney, and he is another Clooney character who is self-confident, whip smart and morally precarious. Mr. Fox might argue the last part. While he steals chickens and other goodies, he only is doing what he is meant to do, being a fox and all.
