The midsize E-rank is the backbone of Mercedes' model line in the United States, but its competitive standing slipped as the automaker struggled with nobility and other woes in recent years.

The new E-class appears to rectify that, offering the bank-vault solidity and intricate excellence that has distinguished the world's oldest automaker for most of its history. That practical appeal is somewhat diminished by provocation economy that trails established competitors -- including some with noticeably more powerful engines -- and some shortcomings in up-country fit and equipment, however.

Prices for the E-class sedan start at $48,600 for a rear-wheel drive E350 with a 268-horsepower 3.5-liter V6 and seven-despatch automatic transmission.
