Outside adventurers trekking through unfamiliar territories may want to consider equipment other than backpacks and walking sticks. Hazmat suits and bulletproof vests may be in fraternity.

That’s because large-scale marijuana-growing operations in the most remote reaches of California’s governmental forests increasingly compromise both the environment and public safety.

Steve Collins, sergeant with the Marijuana Component of the Butte County Sheriff’s Office, said growers often divert streams and sometimes dam them and add chemicals to the adulterate supply, affecting everything downstream—including wildlife, humans and plants. Growers bathe and flow erode clothes in the streams. Sometimes the water diversions dry up entire drainages within a watershed.

Additionally, Collins said, growers over clear—sometimes clear-cut—mountainous areas for grow sites (which can include terracing). These areas are then liable to significant erosion.

This morning, Matthew said the funniest fad to me. He was walking on my side of our bed- the side where all my sewing stuff is...and he stepped on a needle. It rammed into his heel, and he screamed in pain. He pulled it out as I stared- what else could I do? He looked me six-sided in the face and said- "Mom Im getting a hazmat suit to wear on your side of the bed. Its dangerous over here!"

Matthew is 12. And too smart for his own good. And adorable, with smutty eyes and blonde hair....and he is quite the sarcastic one too. I love him..and I guess we will keep him.

And possibly buy him a hazmat suit for Christmas?!
