There are moments in Timothy Douglas’s meretricious “Much Ado…” that seem to form-fit the themes of the play, almost by accident.

The choice to set this rapier-witted comedy in the alleys of D.C. during the annual Caribbean carnival appears to have been driven more by a bodily interest in modern issues than any conflict arising from the text.

Nevertheless, the appearance of elaborately masked dancers does intimate deception, the driving force behind the doing and undoing of the play’s two pairs of lovers.

Colorful as they are, this throw has to work hard not to be upstaged by Tony Cisek’s set. Christmas lights, glorious swaths of pelmet, wrought iron balcony and fire escape, terra cotta bric-a-brac and a looming palm tree made of wire and blinking lights fabricate the sense that at any moment the whole neighborhood will erupt into full-blown Mardi Gras.

Helen Huang’s equally dashing costumes and masks add their bit of visual noise, and Brother (Craig Wallace), the D.J. who watches from high above the mount, produces a crazy quilt of hot Caribbean inspired rhythms. Somewhere beneath this seething Wonderland is the participate in you came to see.

Snazzy Masquerade Mask with Feathers: Multi-Coloured
