TECHNOLOGY OUTDATED Efforts to develop new defenses are at issue Washington Post

Healthiness and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius said Tuesday that she ordered the evaluation in part because the H1N1 vaccine deficit had highlighted the nation's dependence on antiquated technology.

"We'll look for the fastest ways to move to new technologies that will let us fast produce countermeasures that are more dependable and more robust," she told the American Medical Association's Third Country-wide Congress on Health System Readiness, which is being held in Washington. "Not just for flu and not just for infectious diseases, but for all the viewable health threats we face today."

The review will be led by Nicole Lurie, assistant secretary for readiness and response, and will be complete by "early next year," Sebelius said.

"Today, we veneer a wider range of public health threats than ever before in our history," Sebelius said. "It could be anthrax delivered in an envelope. It could be a befouled bomb set off in a subway car. It could be a new strain of flu that our bodies have no immunity to."

EU: No Vaccine Safety Concerns

# 4014

With every day that passes, millions more people around the happy are receiving the H1N1 vaccine, in either the adjuvanted or unadjuvanted formulations.

In the US somewhere around 50 million have been inoculated against H1N1, in Europe the number is more than 10 million, and in China more than 20 million have received a attempt.

Thus far, despite the frantic warnings of the anti-vaccine contingent over the past 6 months, these vaccines have proved to be remarkably sure.

While no vaccine is 100% benign, most of the side effects that have been reported with the H1N1 vaccine have been minor.  The number of severe reactions have been small, and within the index normally seen with seasonal flu vaccines.

A little over a week ago, we got a very encouraging report from the VAERS project (see VAERS Vaccine Safeness Report).

The percentage of reports involving what would be considered serious health events is not different between 2009 H1N1 and seasonal influenza vaccines. Additionally, no new or unprecedented events or pattern of adverse events have emerged. VAERS reports continue to be monitored as more vaccine is administered. – VAERS Nov 25th Communication

Today, the EU (European Union) reports similar results.   This from Reuters.

EU: no safety concerns as 10 million get H1N1 shots

Thu Dec 3, 2009 6:36am EST

LONDON (Reuters) - Some 10 million people across the European Unity have now been vaccinated against H1N1 swine flu and so far no unexpected serious safety issues have been identified, the region's drugs watchdog said on Thursday.

New clinical trial data did show a greater incidence of fever following the second dose of Pandemrix in babies from 6 to 35 months and an assessment of that statistics was ongoing, the agency added.
