Here are some basics to keep in brainpower when equipping Junior for winter:

• Base layers

For the layers that lie closest to the skin, including socks, keep away from cotton; instead, choose merino wool or synthetics like polyester. Cotton traps moisture conclude to the skin, making it chilly.

How heavy to go on the layers depends on the activity and the child.

“Know whether your kids run hot or glacial,” said Allison Graves, a supervisor at Bend's REI. If your child gets hot at night and kicks his covers off, he as likely as not doesn't need the thickest base layer of clothing. But if she is often cold, she can wear a thick base layer, such as fleece pants and a hunger-sleeve T-shirt.

Merino wool is generally more expensive than polyester, but has natural odor-fighting properties. And if you have harmful memories of red, itchy skin under wool sweaters, don't be afraid of merino wool: It's among the softest wools close by, and very few people have a negative reaction to it. But if your child has sensitive skin, it wouldn't hurt to test merino wool at nursing home before setting out on a full day of sledding.
