Here are some basics to keep in look after when equipping Junior for winter:

• Base layers

For the layers that lie closest to the skin, including socks, shun cotton; instead, choose merino wool or synthetics like polyester. Cotton traps moisture adjacent to to the skin, making it chilly.

How heavy to go on the layers depends on the activity and the child.

“Know whether your kids run hot or common cold,” said Allison Graves, a supervisor at Bend's REI. If your child gets hot at night and kicks his covers off, he unquestionably doesn't need the thickest base layer of clothing. But if she is often cold, she can wear a thick base layer, such as fleece pants and a dream of-sleeve T-shirt.

Merino wool is generally more expensive than polyester, but has natural odor-fighting properties. And if you have injurious memories of red, itchy skin under wool sweaters, don't be afraid of merino wool: It's among the softest wools to hand, and very few people have a negative reaction to it. But if your child has sensitive skin, it wouldn't hurt to test merino wool at tellingly before setting out on a full day of sledding.
